There are some summer days in New England that seem to unfold exactly as they should.
The morning begins on the water. The afternoon is spent somewhere in the sun. There’s a little history, a little wandering, something good to eat, and, inevitably, ice cream. And if you’ve planned the day just right, by evening you’re sitting in a theater, wondering how one day could feel so far removed from the ordinary.
That day can be found in Stony Creek.
Tucked along the Connecticut shoreline in Branford, Stony Creek is a village with an outsized sense of place. The bustling little community wraps around a small harbor, looking out toward the Thimble Islands just offshore. From the town center, nearly everything you could want is within walking distance or a short boat ride away. It doesn’t take much to make a day here feel like a vacation.
And recently, Stony Creek got a little more attention. The Thimble Islands and the Volsunga IV were featured in The New York Times in a story about memorable short cruises around New England.
So here’s our suggestion for spending a summer day in Stony Creek.
Begin on the Water
Start your morning aboard the Volsunga IV for a Thimble Island cruise.
From the harbor, the village quickly gives way to open water as you make your way toward the Thimble Islands. Dozens of islands and more than a hundred rocky outcroppings are scattered across the Sound, some large enough for elaborate summer homes and others little more than granite rising from the water.
Every island seems to have a story.
On the cruise, you’ll hear about the legends, history, and peculiar characters that have made the Thimbles what they are. You’ll pass old cottages, rocky shores, seabirds, and places that look almost unchanged from another century.
It’s a beautiful way to see Connecticut, but more than that, it’s a way to understand the place.
Come Ashore for Lunch
When you return to the village, don’t go too far.
Stop at Thimbleberry and pick up some lunch before deciding where the afternoon takes you. Stony Creek is the kind of place where the day can unfold without much of a plan.
And there are two very good directions to go from here.
Follow the Water
If the morning on the boat only makes you want more time on the Sound, catch the Thimble Islands Ferry to Outer Island.
Part of the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, Outer Island offers a quieter side of the Thimble Islands. Walk the paths, look for coastal birds, hunt for sea glass, or simply find a place to sit and watch the water.
Or stay on land and spend the afternoon at the Stony Creek Beach.
There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about a towel, a book, and nowhere you need to be for a few hours.
Or Follow the History
For those who would rather spend the afternoon wandering through the past, head up to the Stony Creek Museum.
Stony Creek’s history is written in stone, quite literally. The village was once at the center of a thriving granite industry, and its famous pink granite found its way into buildings and monuments across the country.
The museum brings that history to life.
Afterward, take a walk along the trolley trail. The path offers another glimpse into the village’s past while giving you a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy the quieter side of Stony Creek.
Meanwhile, the water people can keep working on their tans.
By late afternoon, everyone can meet back up in the town center.
Pizza, Salad, and a Little Downtime
For the start of the evening, meet back up at the Stony Creek Market for pizza and salad. It’s a good time to sit down, cool off, and compare notes about the day.
Then there’s just one thing left to do.
Don’t Skip the Ice Cream
Grab a cone at Thimbleberry and take a stroll through the village as the sun starts to drop.
This is the part of the day when you realize you haven’t had to go very far to feel like you’ve been somewhere special.
Watch the boats come back into the harbor as you make your way up the street toward the final stop of the day.
End with a Show
Finish the evening at the Legacy Theatre with a live play. This summer, the 2026 season brings The Wizard of Oz to the stage.
After a day on the water, exploring Stony Creek’s history, and enjoying the village, ending the evening at the historic theater is a fitting way to finish the day.
The Perfect Day
From the first boat ride in the morning to the final curtain at night, Stony Creek has a way of making a summer day feel like a vacation.
And for us, the perfect day starts on the water aboard the Volsunga IV.
