Spring on the Sound: The Season Begins Again

There are moments after every winter when the shoreline shifts.

It doesn’t happen all at once. There’s no grand announcement. Just small signs. The light lingers a little longer over the Thimbles. Boats are uncovered. The smell of salt and mud return as the tide turns winter’s leftovers.

This year, that moment feels earned.

It was a cold one. The kind of cold that settled in and stayed. For a stretch of the winter, the Sound froze over in a way we don’t often see anymore. Ice stretched across the coves and locked everything in place. Here in the Creek, even the usual movement in the harbor came to a stop. Boats sat still. Docks went quiet. The birds went south. The Sound itself held its breath.

And then, slowly, it let go.

The ice broke up first in patches, then all at once. The same water that was frozen started moving again, like it always does.

That’s when you know.

Spring is here, and with it, the start of a new season aboard Volsunga IV.

We are getting ready to head back out among the Thimble Islands, with reservations now open for the 2026 season.

If you’ve been out with us before, you know what to expect. If you haven’t, this is the time to find out.

After a winter like that, there’s nothing quite like being back on the water.
